Lecture 11 goal theories
1. Physiological needs (sleep, thirst)
2. Safety needs (freedom from danger, anxiety, or psychological threat)
3. Love needs (acceptance from parents, teachers, peers)
4. Self -Esteem needs (confidence in one’s ability)
5. Self-actualization needs (creative self-expression, etc.)
- This idea in the classroom: teacher’s need to be aware of all of their students individual
needs in order for learning to occur
Goal theories: (TASSIC)
1. Affective goals:
a. entertainment, tranquility, happiness, pleasurable bodily sensations, and physical
well-being
2. Cognitive goals:
a. exploration to satisfy one’s curiosity, attaining understanding, engaging in
intellectual creativity, and maintaining positive self-evaluations
3. Subjective organization goals:
a. unity (experiencing a spiritual sense of harmony or oneness with people, nature,
or a greater power) and transcendence
i. (experiencing optimal or extraordinary states of function-ing that go
beyond ordinary experience)
4. Self-assertive social relationship goals:
a. experiencing a sense of individuality, self-determination, superiority (in
comparisons with others), and resource acquisition (obtaining material and social
support from others)
5. Integrative social relationship goals:
a. belongingness, social responsibility (meeting one’s ethical and social
obligations), equity (promoting fair-ness and justice), and resource provision
(giving material and social support to others)
6. Task goals:
a. mastery, task creativity, management (handling everyday tasks with organization
and efficiency), material gain, and safety.
Intrinsic motivation:
- inner desire not dictated by a degree requirement, but something you are truly interested
in exploring

Self-determination theory specifies that social settings promote intrinsic motivation when they satisfy innate psychological needs. Said that we need to formalize a theory around what flow is. Flow: when you get so interested in what you are doing, you lose your sense of time, when something is very pleasurable, you want to experience it again.
