Lecture 10 views of motivation
These contingent motivators often do not work or do harm
- Rewards narrow our focus: doesn’t work for problems that we are supposed to think
outside of the box for
- How this relates to education:
1. The educational system is in need of some kind of change
2. The way that we reward students is actually not effective
- When problems require us to think more broadly, rewards lead to a narrower type of
thinking:
o does not allow us to solve it quicker

definition and overview of motivation:
- Motivation:
o a theoretical construct used to explain the initiation, direction, intensity,
persistence, and quality of behavior (especially goal-directed behavior )
- Motives:
o are hypothetical constructs used to explain why people are doing what they are
doing.
Evolving views of motivation:
1. Reinforcement theories:
- Idea that we can motivate students with rewards
- For students, incentivizing is not something that actually motivates them
2. Need theories
- Whether our basic needs are met so that we can push students to go beyond their basic
needs
