Lecture 10 – views of motivation
These contingent motivators often do not work or do harm
- Rewards narrow our focus: doesn’t work for problems that we are supposed to think

- How this relates to education:
1. The educational system is in need of some kind of change
2. The way that we reward students is actually not effective
- When problems require us to think more broadly, rewards lead to a narrower type of
thinking:

definition and overview of motivation:
- Motivation:
o a theoretical construct used to explain the initiation, direction, intensity,
persistence, and quality of behavior (especially goal-directed behavior )
- Motives:
o are hypothetical constructs used to explain why people are doing what they are
doing.
Evolving views of motivation:
1. Reinforcement theories:
- Idea that we can motivate students with rewards
- For students, incentivizing is not something that actually motivates them
2. Need theories
- Whether our basic needs are met so that we can push students to go beyond their basic
needs

These contingent motivators often do not work or do harm. Rewards narrow our focus: doesn"t work for problems that we are supposed to think outside of the box for. How this relates to education: the educational system is in need of some kind of change, the way that we reward students is actually not effective. When problems require us to think more broadly, rewards lead to a narrower type of thinking: does not allow us to solve it quicker. Idea that we can motivate students with rewards. For students, incentivizing is not something that actually motivates them: need theories.
