PSYCH 2H03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Ames Room, Binocular Disparity, Subjective Constancy
Document Summary
We see the world in terms of meaningful objects: visual input needs to be organized. Perception =/= sensation: stimulus projects on retina gives two dimensional representation of different colours and intensities of light, out perception goes beyond the information given. The reason why we see the lines between shades as darker (even though the entire block is the same colour throughout for each) is because each cell laterally inhibits the cell beside it. Edge enhancement as a result of lateral inhibition. Different kinds of neurons have different receptive fields: e. g. line orientation, edge detection, centre-surround, direction of movement. Systems and pathways within the visual system are also specialized to deal with different kinds of visual information: parallel processing. Have to put it all together (form, depth, motion perception: spatial position, rhythm. Grouping (gestalt principles): how we tend to group objects. Similarily: shape, colour, orientation, closure, proximity, good continuation, common fate, simplicity.
