Performance what happens when you actually do it. During the course of this day, you might say about 20 000 words. These will be chosen from a vocab of about 80 000 words. This can be done at about 200 words per minute. Those 80 000 words in your english vocab are made up of only 40 different sounds (phonemes) These phonemes are spoken at a rate of 11 phonemes per second. New words can be formed: hardware and software lead to spyware and malware. Words can be take on new meanings. Can apply old rules to new words: vape, vaped, vaping. Words built on the same set of basic unit. Hierarchical, with each level of composed of other sublevels. Morphology the meaning bits of words. Pragmatic real word meaning; how language is used.
