Research methods: how do we study the effects of aging. Three main age-related research designs: cross sectional, longitudinal designs, sequential. Any data collection method fine for all three: experimental (sort of) Age is not a causal variable, not able to randomly assign. Cofounded with everything: survey, behavioural observation, archival. Test different age groups once, and compare: ex. Midus national survey effort people devote to personal health. Appears that the older we get, the more effort we devote to. Good method if you want quick, cheap, easy data collection. But : survival principle general personal health, as well as women devote more effort to personal health. See a correlation, but cannot make a causal claim. Association claim (cid:498)old age more associated with higher levels of trait cautiousness(cid:499) Have survived all of life"s events up to that point live lives. People who live longer may not represent population in that make them more likely to stay alive.
