Research methods: how do we study the effects of aging. Pros: benefits of longitudinal design but lower cost, takes less time, can test for cohort effect, can compare patterns of development across cohorts. Cons: still suffer from cross-generational problem. Need very specific set of guidelines to make causal need to only have one variable, no cofounding variables. Need to be able to randomly assign cant randomly assign age. Can"t draw causal conclusions about pre-exisiting traits. Memory test vs. person perception randomly. Having the format be a test caused poorer performance, across age groups (causal) Age is associated with differential performance (correlation) Choose (cid:498)best(cid:499) age-related design for your research goals. They affect older participants" performance on age-stereotype-related. They affect us as we age variables: self perception of aging, stereotype threat. Exposing to words associated with aging stereotypes subconsciously activated the stereotypes. Debriefed told they can go pointed towards elevator.
