Models of criminal profiling (holmes and holmes etc. ) organized / disorganized distinction in the fbi model (canter at al) No real evidence to indicate this is a sensible distinction to draw. Originally based on interviews with a number of serial killers. Problem: (1) didn"t have a lot of people willing to talk to them, (2) they were interviews of opportunity (who would talk to you?) *there exist a number of different criminal systems. But these systems don"t agree with each other. Yes there exist some similarities but they are very different. Mass murder: 4 or more killings taking place at the same time in the same venue. Murder sprees: cross between mass murder and serial killings, several different murders that take place in different places without a cooling off period, killings near uc santa barbara. Serial murders: exists a cooling off period between each offense, ex britain"s crossbow cannibal. Have developed a typology: says there are types of offenders.
