Recall=reporing details from memory; straight up story telling. Recogniion=determining if something is the same as what you saw earlier; comparison: voice, face, clothing, etc. Only limited capacity in short term memory; important things get transferred to long term and others discarded to make room for more info in short term. Unknowing subjects told to watch scene; ends up being a crime: caught of guard, they are asked to describe the situaion bc they are now a witness. Generally there are 3 variables (2 independent and 1 dependent) Independent: esimator variable=present at ime of crime that cannot be changed. Eg age, lighing, use of weapons: system variable=can be manipulated to induce certain answers; eg type of lineup procedure used by police, line of quesioning; controlled by jusice system. Dependent: 3 types: recall of event/crime, recall perpetrator, recognize perpetrator. Recall of perpetrator can have 2 formats: open ended=free narraive, direct quesion=series of quesions.
