PSYCH 3CD3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Protestant Work Ethic, Gordon Allport, Aversive Racism
Document Summary
Gordon allport: defeated intellectually, prejudice lingers emotionally. Even before trump: unobtrusive measures of prejudice. Give people subtle tasks that they won"t outright say they are prejudiced, but prejudice will still be indicated. E. g. given the choice, people tend to choose to hire white over blacks. When we ask people whether they are prejudiced, they"ll say no. If we ask them whether they endorse stereotypes (e. g. to what extent do you think black people are ), they will say the right thing and not endorse the stereotype. Obvious asking doesn"t work because people seem to not be prejudiced. People on surveys look like they aren"t prejudiced. Prejudice comes out when we are sneaky: physiological measures of prejudice. Expose people pictures to outgroup members and measure physiological response (e. g. gsr, muscle responses, heart rate) Vanman (1990): exposed people to pictures of white and black people and asked how they would like to hang out with them.
