PSYCH 3EV3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Detection Theory
Document Summary
Vigilance an alarm system promoting detection, discrimination, and response to threat. Anxiety disorders include disorders that share features of excessive fear and anxiety and related behavioural disturbances. Key note: causing clinical distress therefore defining excessiveness as disorder. Limitations to the prevailing clinical perspective: excessive is based on clinical judgement, no evidence to support the excessiveness-as-disorder argument. Signal detection theory things to consider before making a response: probability of signal (how likely is it that i actually heard a cheetah?, cost of defense (cd, cost of miss (cm) If cm is 2x greater than cd, then defense should be expressed only when there is a 50% chance that the signal is actually present (less vigilant defense system) However, if cm is 20x greater than cd, the defense should be expressed whenever there is at least 5% chance that the signal is actually present (more vigilant defense system)
