Lecture 17 october 28: piaget believed children did not have object permanence. In the first stage, they can track a moving object then almost immediately lose interest when it disappears. Stage 3 involves anticipatory eye movements (4-8 months) Location as object identity: at 5 months, infants identify an object in terms of its location - the item is coded by its location instead of in terms of colour or shape. What would piaget say: preschoolers understanding was perceptually dominated and pre-causal, this would not fit in to his theory. Intuitive math: all cultures have a way of discussing and comparing numbers, all cultures have a way of adding and subtracting at least small numbers, children develop basic understanding of numbers at the same age cross-culturally. Numerosity: even at young ages, children can tell the difference between two and three, shown by the habituation paradigm , as young as 5 months.
