Personal reaction to the loss of any object to which an individual is attatched. Depends on nature of attachment/relationship to lost object. An objective state of loss/the fact of loss. One experiences a loss --> one is bereaved. Grief is the subjective response to that state of loss. Outward expressions of morning are determined by culture. In western culture - rise in public mourning, less private mourning. Grieving deeply for someone we didn"t know personally. Old public mourning: public display of grief following death of person in postion of power. New public mourning: following death of celebrities and disaters. Public mourning = essentially mourning someone you knew of but not personally. Identification with celebrities/victims of disaster growth of emotional expressivism. Freud: grief as the normal, yet deeply painful response to being bereaved. The articles displayed very opposite views directed at the idea of grief and how it should be defined.
