Persian vizier under the seljuks: seljuks were facing a threat by a sub sect of shi"as (ismaili") Assassinated high ranking officials: nizam al mulk (under the seljuks) Promoted unification in order to create a kind of mainstream approach to islam. Needs to be united around a number of canonical hadith texts. This is why sahih al muslim and sahih al bukhari become important. In order to create a cohesive set of standards; Need to believe that the qur"an is eternal, its not created.
