Started on: 11/12/2013 2:59:00 PM T UTORIAL N OTES FOR : McMaster University, Fall 2013 T UESDAY , NOVEMBER 12, 2013 Expansion on Islamic Law; HADITH & Development Canonical texts of Hadith - Muslim (deceased 870) - Bukhari (deceased 875)  Product of history  Product of politics  In 9 century what we know as Sunnism today was only a small sect. o Sunni  Sunnah o We know the Sunnah (practices of the prophet through the hadiths) o Aha Al-Sunnah (people who follow the Sunnah)  Schools of thw (wthe not known as Sunnis)  Important 10 & 11 century o Seljuks come and invade o Famous Vizier under the Seljuks – Nizam Al Mulk  The college “Nizamiah”  Persian vizier under the seljuks o Seljuks were facing a threat by a sub sect of Shi’as (Ismaili’)  Group of Ismailis (Assassins)  Terrorizing the Seljuk empire  Assassinated high ranking officials o Nizam Al Mulk (under the Seljuks)  Promoted unification in order to create a kind of mainstream approach to Islam  Needs to be united around a number of canonical hadith texts  This is why Sahih Al Muslim and Sahih Al Bukhari become important  In order to create a cohesive set of standards;  Need to believe that the Qur’an is eternal, its not created  Need to believe and accept the first four caliphs o Mainstream Sunni comes about in History around the 10 & 11 century  SHI’A o Main Hadith book (Al-Kafi that which is sufficient) H ADITH Theology Islamic law; What is the struggle of deriving the law? Ijtihad (mental struggle in order to derive the law; read all of the sources (Impeccable Arabic, impeccable logic) o Divided into two o IBADAT – Between Man & God  Prayers  Fasting  Zakat Angie © McMaster University
