General Introduction to Japan Japan is comprised of four islands, and it is roughly the size of California. • Population of Japan: about 130 million • Population of Tokyo: 12million, Greater Tokyo Area: 32 million • Four islands of Japan: Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu Ethnicity comprises of mostly Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Brazilian of Japanese descent 23% of Japanese population is 65+ Writing systems: Kanji (Chinese), Hiragana (syllables, alphabet), Katakana (sharper, foreign), Romaji (English) Geography of Japan: mostly mountains (represent division), little flat land or plains • 13% of Japan is farmland, 20% of the land is flat where people can live in Religion of Japan • 75% Buddhism, 85% Shinto, 1% Christian, 20% New Religious, 70% Non-Religious •
