Fumi-e is a wood block carved to resemble an idolized religious figure. Christianity was outlawed and buddhism was a state religion. Oversea travel was banned, churches were burned. Fumi-e stepping pictures (wood carvings of jesus or mary that citizens had to step on to denounce religion) If you were caught being christian, you and your acquaintances/neighbours/family would be executed. Records of christians and non-christians were kept at temples. Being discovered became a fear of many japanese christians. Kakkure kurishtian had secret religious symbols and private practice rooms to practice the religion: christian religious items are disguised as buddhist items. Fumi-e was not very effective; many practiced the religion in private. Christianity still thrives in japan to this day: mixed with buddhism and shinto. Anti-semitism was the main cause, but so was: nazi regime"s influence, after-effects of the war, desire for jewish possessions, the communist leadership.
