ISLAMIC LAW SHARIA
- Laws are important because they put the ethical commands into actions
- The Qur’anic values and principles of the Qur’an are put into action through the law;
- God wants us to be good human beings, but we have to follow the law of God;
- To worship God, we have to perform the laws of God;
- Shari’a (a place where there is water)
o When Muslims follow Shari’a, they’re going to the water place of God where they can
quench their thirst;
o Similar to orthodox Jews who are very law centered; Halaqa
o Jews and Muslims do not consume pork
o Jews eat Kosher, Muslims eat Halal
- Live by the commands of God;
- These commandments are implemented by the laws of God; in order to make us better human
beings;
- Pray so as to become spiritually collected;
- Fasting, is connected to Taqwa (being aware of God)
- Faith is connected to the Shari’a
o Islamic Law is seen as comprehensive and uniform; it covers each and every part of your
life;
o Public and private life;
- No such thing as secularism in Islam;
SOURCES
QURAN WORD OF GOD;
- Because it’s the word of God; no Muslim could disobey the word of God;
- The Qur’an is not a book of Law; hardly 600 verses
- Although it is the first source of law, it’s not the only source of law;
SUNNAH / HADITH THE PRACTICES OF THE PROPHET;
- Obedience to God, through obedience to the Prophet;
- Sunnah becomes an extension of the revelation
- Three components
o Consent (acquiesce supposing someone said something and the prophet did not object,
means that he is ok with it)
o Speech
o Action (what he did and what he refused)
- Problem is that the Sunnah at the beginning was not uniform;
