Constantine became emperor early in the fourth century. He became a sympathizer and christianity gained official status in the roman empire alongside the state cult. By the end of the fourth century everybody under the control of rome had to be baptized (317). This was problematic for those who resisted, including the jews. Fathers developed the adversus judaeos (arguments against the jews), during this time. Constantine"s conversion had started a process that transformed christianity from a widespread but obscure movement to an official religion. More and more people became christians and by the end of the fifth century it had reached. !2: the doctrine of the trinity (one god, three persons--god the father, god the son, god the. Holy spirit) more or less absent from the new testament had now been defined and refined and was the central truth claim of christianity.
