Social Work Week #5 (October 4, 2017) Understanding Social Problems *the critical literature review rubric online now read the Jesson and Lacey (2006) it is the format they want* st DUE November 1 at 5pm APA format (you do not need an abstract, but need the rest) What is a social problem? - A social problem exists when: o A sufficiently powerful population becomes collectively aware of conditions it considers to be threatening to its well being o Sets out to alter those conditions so as to reduce the perceived threat - Social problems require: o A collective set of values o Awareness of the condition o Sufficient power to act Noam Chomsky Documentary - The inequality comes from super-wealthy - The American Dream o You are born poor, and you get rich - In a democracy, public opinion has to have some say in the governments doings some public sectors do not like democracy, because it gives power to the people, and not then The 10 Principles of Concentration of Wealth and Power - Wealth goes into power (elections) which goes back to wealth (legislation) - The Vicious Cycle o they make sure their own interests are taken care of (corporations) 1. Reduce democracy o back to the founding of USA, power should be in the hands of the wealthy, because they are more capable the senate was not elected originally o protect the minority against the majority o the system was set up to prevent democracy so the poor couldnt get together against the rich o People say to either reduce inequality and we wont have this problem OR reduce democracy o With protests, more people got to be involved in politics minority rights/women rights/environmental/opposing of aggression/poor 2. Shape Ideology o trilateral commission: concerned with the excess of democracy o people were beginning to group together too much democracy o They thought there was a fail in the schools/institutions with young people But they never mention the private businesses The general public needs to be controlled, but the companies do not 3. Redesign the Economy
