Privilege: advantages earned and unearned, privilege are the unearned advantages granted mainly through birth. Based on the membership in a particular social group: earned advantages are gained (education, skills, etc. , failure to recognize this distinction, easier to earn advantages when you have privileges. People are blocked form opportunities to self-develop. People are excluded from full participation in society. People don"t have certain rights: oppression is socially constructed. It divides people into groups (racism, classism, sexism, etc. : lena dominelli (2002) says concept of oppression is more nuanced and complex than just oppressed and oppressor, people can occupy positions od oppressor and the oppressed. We do this intentionally and unintentionally: what dominance says/does to maintain power. Racism and sexism used to be problems racism isn"t a problem in canada like it is in the u. s. Calling it something else men interrupting women recreates and re-establishes patterns of male dominance.
