Both material objects and ideas Cultural universals: bodily adornment, sports, gift giving, social institution Cultural surprises - surprised by practices or beliefs of a different culture Norms - standards in behavior Ethnocentrism: one's own practices and beliefs are superior Cultural relativism - all cultural practices have equal value Ideology and action - a gap exists between what we say and what we do • Actions fall short of beliefs • Environmentalism • Consumption of alcohol Contemporary Culture Globalization - used to be mainly European and American immigrants, but now different cultures Globalization: • Politically • Economically • Travel and migration (transnationalism, people having strong ties to two countries, ie. Work related etc) • Communication • Work occupations (eg. McDonalds - efficiency, capabilities, predictability, controlled) Post - modernism: • Reflects broad range of projects • Knowledge and "truth" is fluid and shaped and reshaped through discourse (ie.
