SOCIOL 1A06 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Siq, Black Canadians, Apartheid
Document Summary
Deviance : violation of social norms (rules that guide our behaviour) Informal social control is not institutional: what family and friends think of us, often invisible, not often noticed until a norm is violated. Tiger woods scandal: public or private matter, touched on a lot of issues related on how we draw moral boundaries o, tells us how deviance and crime are socially constructed. More economically and politically powerful groups more successful at resisting being called criminals or deviant o. Less powerful groups less able to resist these labels. Sociologists examine these definitions of deviance and crime and say they"re fluid. Look at historical and cross national variation: and consider the way crime and deviance vary across time and place. We can look at seriousness of a norm violation in 3 ways o o: how harmful the act is. 2. howmuch agreement there is that the behaviour is wrong o: the severity of the punishment imposed.
