Work Within News Organizations 1) Importance of Rounds ­ One of the work routines for gathering news ­ Schedules for visit locations and talking to sources that are likely to produce  news ­ Justice beat – might include locations like city police department, provincial  police department, courthouse, local prison  i. Person will make their rounds to these locations  ii. Each day the journalist will visit and talk to the sources ­ Journalists need to be well organized so they can meet their deadlines  D) Robert A. Hackett and Richard Gruneau (the Missing News: Filters and Blind Spots in  Canada’s Press) ­ Research Questions i. What news filters are shaping Canada’s press? 1. News filters: factors that systematically weed out certain kinds  of potential news ii. What blind spots exist in Canada’s press? 1. Blind spots: publicly significant information about the world that  systematically gets omitted from the news  ­ News filters lead to the blind spots  ­ Research methodology i. Made use of interviews and a survey questionnaire  ii. Conducted interviews with journalists who worked in Toronto’s media  outlets iii. Constructed a survey questionnaire and distributed it to journalists across  Canada  ­ Journalists’ Perceptions of News Filters i. Lack of Organizational Resources 1. Most frequently mentioned filter 2. Suggested that a lack of organizational resources is creating the  omission of significant news 3. Resources they are talking about include a lack of time and  money  a. Lack of money because a lot of news organizations are  slashing their operating budgets (especially private, but  some of public) so they have less money to spend on  news production b. Lack of time because a number of journalist
