The basis of society is its mode of production (the way a society sustains its livelihood, how does a society keep it all going?) which has two components, (1) a physical component (i. e. the means of production) (2) a human component (i. e. the social relations of production) Capitalism is inherently competitive - capitalists are always trying to increase production. *marx argues, workers can feel like cogs in a machine, they aren"t meaningful in the production process. This leads to alienation, from the means of production and from their own talents and from the enjoyment of the work process. Marx argues that capitalism, inherently creates con ict between these two groups. And if the working class could become aware of the inequalities of the system, that the struggle is not between them and others in the working class but rather against the bourgeoisie (class consciousness) *marx notes that the ruling class can dampen the odds of class consciousness and an uprising.
