SOCIOL 2S06 Lecture 29: Lecture 29, Phenomenology and Ethnomethodology
Document Summary
Had an influence on schutz, both were interested in a particular issue, both interested in subjectively meaningful actions, a concept that was developed by weber. Schutz picked up on this notion of subjectively meaningful action. Weber was interested in how historical, cultural contexts, and social structure shaped subjectively meaningful action. Weber wrote about how protestant religious doctrines had an impact on ppl, and led ppl to attach meaning to their work, included the notion of predestination that you were either saved or damned from birth. And ppl began to develop this idea that if they work hard, it was a sign of salvation. There is an element here of moving down from the macro to the micro level. Schutz was much more interested in how individuals experience subjectively meaningful action in everyday life, rather than how that action is structured by the larger context. Clearly paying more attention to the larger context (weber) than schutz is.
