People create and reinforce inequality in their everyday interactions . Boys in high school: rejected academic success, considered not cool , instead focused on masculinity and prevented them from escaping disadvantaged background. Through interactions with each other, reproduced their working-class status. Our social class status shapes how we interact with people. = high socioeconomic status person ignores personal bubble because feel entitled to do so to less powerful. Ignores the fact that there is social structures that constrain people, blame victim mentality. Inequality caused by male political, economic, and legal advantage . Ch 11 siq: duffy and mandell, the feminization of poverty . Single mothers (divorce/separation/ break up increases risk of poverty) Macro: labour market (occupational sex segregation, gender differences in earnings, political structures), legal system. Micro: interactions between men and women (communication, etc. ) Focuses on gender inequalities and ignores race, class, sexual orientation, etc. inequalities. Economic inequality is central, but there are other sources of power .
