Examines functions of educational institutions (selection, socialization) Selection = sorting of people, done by the way of streaming. Give students tests in grade 7/8 to see what high school each should go to, this a ects their future paths. Durkheim said schools are teaching a moral education, ex. Functionalist say students are taught these things not explicitly but through hidden curriculum. The more education one gets, the more likely they"d have a positive attitude towards social justice. Hidden curriculum is to accept your place in school and be respectful of authority and schools support capitalism. Pierre bourdieu: social capital and cultural capital. Many people want to send their kids to private school so their children are friends with good kids which will help them along the road, this is social capital - good connections. Cultural capital - knowledge of ne culture ex. ballet, golf and theatre. Middle and upper class have social, cultural capital converting into economic capital.
