Social signi cance of categories of race and ethnicity. Objective de nitions of ethnicity: ethnicity is xed and static. Subjective approaches to ethnicity: ethnic identity as variable and exible. Experiences of visible minorities in university students, (henry and tator book) 3 forms: based on racist ideas. Institutional practices that were originally racist but no longer are. Institutions that unintentionally restrict the chances of certain groups ie, racial pro ling. A theory that suggests it is normal for groups to form bounded kinds of communities where they don"t want to let outsiders in. One group is neither better than the other. New racism: racism has taken on new forms (cultural di erences opposed to biological di erences). Impacts of new racism is the same - unequal treatment. White privilege - concept developed by peggy mcintosh, feminist and anti-racist scholar and activist. Frustration over blocked opportunities leads to racism against racial minorities. People seek out others who are similar.
