Females tend to have lower self esteem than males (all age groups) Structural disadvantage more likely to be experienced by females, lower socioeconomic groups, older people. Individuals who depart from normative roles about being men or women. Some are transsexuals who want to change their gender by changing their appearance: may combine male and female gender roles. Sex they were assigned at birth doesn"t fit who they feel they are. Intersex: an individual whose chromosomal and/or hormonal makeup and/or sexual/reproductive anatomy is different than what is typical , an intersexed individual may have biological features of both the male and female sexes. Strongest critique by activists: sex assignment on babies. Shouldn"t be routine, only if there is a health risk. Historically, doctors and surgeons have intervened for aesthetic reasons. Surgery should only be considered when the child is old enough to make the decision: reflect bias of surgeons/doctors saying you have to be either f or m .
