Limitations of family policy in canada are revealed when we compare our countries to others: we assume that canada is very generous with support, but we often fall short in many areas. Length of leaves depends on area and province: maternity - 15-18 weeks. Trudeau recently extended parental leave to 18 months: Lower benefits over 18 months, or higher over 12 months. If a couple is collecting employment insurance at the same time, only one person can receive the family supplement: as family income increase, supplement decreases. Limitations: recent labour force participation, eligibility criteria in canada is not as flexible as it is in other countries, many families are having children close together, which may reduce eligibility for benefits. Offers period at the end of parental leave where families can get several weeks of benefits, only if the father takes time off to take care of child.
