Theories in the sociology of education sept 16th. Structure: the control of larger social forces on how life is lived, examples: bureaucracy, law system, class system. Agency: the initiative and action taken by the individual to rule their own life, examples: we can bring ourselves out of poverty, challenging the justice system. Positivist: we can study humans the same as we study cells and other things. Interpretivist: we can only study people if we understand how they interpret the reality around them. Class divides marxism: always a struggle going on when there is a strike. Shortcomings: classic macrosociology tends to ignore problems like gender and race and have nothing to do with white old men. Interested in development of the self": lots of stuff here again - i and me , play and game stage, generalized other, symbols how people attribute meaning to different symbols, how meaning is created in interactions.
