Is a perspective that focuses on how individuals continuously exchange and interpret symbols. Through the process of socialization people learn the symbols that are crucial for interaction in their particular culture. Symbols include words, languages, gestures, facial expressions and body language. There has to be a shared understanding of these symbols. These symbols and the meaning vary across culture interaction becomes difficult if not impossible if dealing with someone from another culture. the emergence and development of symbolic interactionist theory. Can be traced back to the chicago school (not an actual school just a name given to a group of thinkers at the school). Most of these thinkers, scholars were in the department of sociology. The department of sociology at chicago was established in 1892 and dominate in sociology in till the 1930s. William isaac thomas: had some influence over the development of symbol. He is best known for the concept for the definition of the situation.
