Lecture 3&4 the global divide- inequality across society. Power, prestige, property (idea of how much power you have in relation to others, why few people in society make rules etc) Looks at how given all these transformations in society ( ex hunter, industrial etc) we still maintain some form of social order!! How is it maintained? (mechanic, organic, solidarity, etc) Focused on the division of labour and how society maintains social order. Organic solidarity (individuals held together through interdependence) Dependence leads to high form of social cohesion. Society ensures positions at top is filled by the right kind of people and other kind of people do unpleasant jobs (differential rank arises) different jobs require different skill sets. Critique of functionalist examination (melvin tumin 1954: how do we assess the functional importance for the survival of society, if stratification worked society would be meritocracy.
