Weber : sources of authority: traditional, rational-legal and charismatic power, prestige, property. When the obtain that three, they are going to hoard it, keep it to themselves. This causes a struggle for others as they can"t obtain any of the three. Durkheim : focused on the division of labour and how society maintains social order. Says there is a division of labour (everyone doing different things) but we are still held together and dependent on each other. Organic solidarity (individuals held together through interdependence) If society is going to survive, all social categories need to be filled. Ie. people need to be cleaners while others need to be doctors. Says social inequality is a way to ensure the most important divisions are filled with the right people. Says inequality motivates people as it creates competition. How do we assess the functional importance for the survival of society: how do we know a teacher is more important than a plumber.
