SOCIOL 2RR3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Meritocracy, Root Mean Square
Document Summary
Changes to the social contract between employers and employees. Employees are still expected to give their best e ort however, to employers they have become increasingly disposal. Everyone"s competing with each other for the best positions - free market competition. The ideology being that because there"s a free market - it allows the best and brightest" to survive. Companies source both employees and production processes all around the world. Usually leaving a vacuum where local people might have otherwise been employed. More jobs are becoming automated, and these changes combine to create a more precarious economy. The answer we"re often given is education. The social shift from ascription to achievement ; from a system of privilege to a technical meritocracy. However we don"t live in perfect technical meritocracy. Education can"t explain why we have people that have and people that have not. Gender plays a role, race, etc privilege makes a di erence.
