SOCIOL 2S06 Lecture 10: Lecture 10 -- Emile Durkheim
Document Summary
Organic solidarity: what is organic solidarity, a form of solidarity that exists in modern societies. He called it organic solidarity because he drew an analogy between biological organisms and modern societies. Biological organisms is going to have various organs that preform certain functions in order to survive. If they break down and stop working the organism will die. Lack of morality: instead of producing solidarity it creates conflicts and struggles, example: workers, capitalist. They do this in order to protect their own powerful positions and deny positions to other. There is a lack of justice: might see a forced division of labour with norms reflecting sexism and racism. White people will try to uphold racism to keep their positions, and men might uphold sexism to keep their positions. Suicide: durkheim"s study: suicide: a study of sociology (1897). Suicide has a psychological component but durkheim"s innovation was to realize that suicide is: suicide: a study of sociology (1897).
