Document Summary

In modern societies religion is no longer the basis for holding society together. Formal laws includes rights and responsibilities people have in a complex division of labour. Labour legislation in our modern society sets out rights and responsibilities of employers and employees. He saw the normal division of labour as an ideal. Normal division of labour produces social solidarity. It is also normal if it produces morality and justice. The division of labour has morality if the individuals fulfill their obligations. Involves justice if each person has an equal opportunity to take on that position most appropriate to his or her capacities and interests. What happens if there was a lack of justice or morality; there will be no social solidarity. Instead lack of morality and justice will produce tensions and conflict among its people. He argued that insufficient morality (amorality) would produce an anomic division of labour. Anomie refers to the state of normlessness.
