Human isolation:
-tabula rasa blank slate
-the mind is an empty vessel and socialization is like taking a big jug and pouring culture into it
-you cannot become human w/o socialization
-it starts at birth and it never stops
-whenever you learn anything about the culture, whenever you acquire cultural knowledge, that’s
socialization
-children raised in social isolationisolated children
-have limited contact w/ people
-never gone through the socialization process
Feral children-found in the wild that have managed to survive in a forest
-are worse off than isolated children (even if you find isolated children, they rarely develop
normally)
-learning takes place in stages, so the mind will open up during a particular stage and
children will learn fast
-the capacity to learn has to take place at a particular time
-you cannot make up for lost time
-they are not able to form intimate social relationships w/ others (never learned)
-difficult to acquire basic language skills and people that have not been exposed to the
socialization process appear to be strange (not really aware of what’s going on around
them, game playingimportant part of socialization)
-socialization is absolutely necessary before we can become fully human and w/o it, it’s a tragedy
-socialization starts at birth, continues through life, even elderly are socialized into their position in their
life cycle (old age is a status in our culture), it shows us how we are to behave and many times is
determined by the life cycle
Development of self:
-children who have not been exposed to the socialization process lack a sense of self
Cooley:
-introduced the idea of the “looking glass self”
-as I interact w/ you and you interact w/ me you’re looking into a mirror and you get a reflection
of yourself from the other person
-there are all kinds of ways to communicate w/ other people not just through language
-ex. posture, gesture
-they gesture and react to us and allow us to imagine how we appear to them
-we judge how others are evaluating us
-so when we make those judgment we develop self-conscious
-we develop a sense of feelings about who we are
-in order to care about other people we need to have a sense of selfempathy
-we get that from socialization
-we gradually acquire empathy by way of socialization and as we acquire it we develop a sense of self
