SOCPSY 1Z03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Symbolic Interactionism, Psy, On Being
Document Summary
We are more self aware when we have the mirror in front of us and are more likely to follow the standards set by society. The self exists as two parts: one that is active and compulsive, the other is the re exive self that looks back and evaluates our behaviour, comes from symbolic interactionism. The self is really created from the outside in. Self-concept/self-schema: represent our thoughts about who we are, our social identities and our personal qualities. Self-awareness: ability to recognize ourselves as an individual that is separate from the environment. Self-esteem: the value we place on ourselves, an emotional evaluation. Self-knowledge: everything we think we know about ourselves, to do this, we need to be aware of ourselves. Early development of self-awareness: infants have a low level of self-awareness; very limited, based on physiological constraints, mirror test. They often view it as an extension of the room.
