Document Summary

Social psychology - feb 4 - social perception and cognition (continued) A well-organized structure of cognitions about some social entity such as a person, group, role or event. E. g. we associate a set of behaviours with an "aggressive" person. Evolutionary trait: schemas mean we can recognize danger faster and react quickly with less information, which would be an evolutionary advantage to survival. Help us to respond appropriately to situations. Schemas make this possible by: making certain facts easier to remember, helping us process information faster, guiding our inferences/judgements about people and objects, help us interpret ambiguous elements in the situation. Prototypes: abstractions that represent the "typical" of a class or group, i. e. wealthy, cultured, rough neck, etc. Person schemas are cognitive structures that describe the personalities of other individuals (nice person, mean person, etc. ). Mental map in textbook chapter 6 measures how people associate groups of traits together.
