Quanti: decisions are made up front and you have to go through process carefully and ask questions carefully b/c you don"t have a chance. Interaction of data and explanations you get from those you study. Each person is a case we"re studying and the overall case if whatever your question is. Using descriptions of what is happening and how people create meanings. Everyone gets the same questions asked the same way so you can make comparisons. Social media (iv) causes an effect on people"s self-esteem (dv). Intervening variable may be something different, such as platform or a person"s level of self-efficacy. Nothing about meaning, context, developing theory --> that is all figured out. Hypotheses: what is the relationship btwn the iv and the dv. There is a relationship and it"s in neither a positive or negative evidence. Kind of case or unit observed, measured, analyzed. Positivist: using the assumptions of natural science to study the social world.
