When someone says yellow what do you think of: literally the colour yellow, the words you associate with something tells you how you see the world. Immigration research: satzewich article, background knowledge need to find before you can even start the research, where was the information found. Documents : can be read , not produced for social research, non-reactive, not interacting with humans, unobtrusive. Reactive research: people know, they are aware they are being studied, unobtrusive measures, existing setting/situations. Advantages: no subject confounds , assess actual behaviours vs. self-report, safety, reliability inexpensive. Documents: personal, who is the author, literacy as a criterion for creation. Internet: sources of quantitative and qualitative data, who contributes to content, how does a web search prioritize results. Assessing quality: authenticity, question of origin, credibility, errors, distortions, bias, representativeness, typical of the time, meaning, clear, understandable, e. g. older letters with different terms that are hard to understand now / self-censorship.
