The future of an illusion (after 1st midterm) I scorn to distinguish between culture and civilization . Culture really implied something deeper, rooted in the soil of the folk something organic as opposed to civilization, which was associated with arti ciality, commerce and urban living. Our relationship to one another and our relationship to one another in society . (2 important points) ** every individual is virtually an enemy of civilization, though civilization is supposed to be an object of universal human interest *** Many people have a hostile attitude towards civilization because it demands that we renounce a good deal of instinctual satisfaction and grati cation. Civilization has to be defended against the individual, and its regulations, institutions and commands are directed to that task. The decisive question is whether and to what extent it is possible to lessen the burden of the instinctual sacri ces imposed on men, to reconcile men to those which must .
