Document Summary

The stigmatized identities are layered upon each other. All the stigmas added together equate the total stigma. Usually a quantitative approach -- scoring each experience of stigma and tallying it up. An assumption that participants can tease out the experiences. The researcher themselves can tease out the stigmas -- bias in the stigma that they are most interested in studying. Usually ordered hierarchically with certain stigmas having predominance at the top. Says that one stigma is more impactful than the others. Intersectionality: considers different systems of oppression and how they"re interconnected. Stigmatized identities interact with each other and impact the self -- they are not separate, but rather, they are connected. Recognizes that stigmatized identities can be studied separately. By understanding how these identities interact, it provides us with a better understanding of those being studied. Each stigma is given an equal score instead of being ranked. An approach that is common among hiv researchers.
