Ex) james dean, rebel without a cause (nicholas ray 1955) A string of events occurring in a time and space. Diegetic- refers to elements that exist with in the world of the story/diegesis. Non- diegetic- refers to elements that exist outside the diegesis/ story. Score (music) (actually a part of the story) * mel brooks plays with what is diegetic and what is not, he tricks his audience* They start our as diegetic, but they turn non- diegetic. Bring in the real life person they were talking about. Empathizing audience shares the pain and suffering of the protagonist. Aristotle called this catharsis - the release of emotional tension. It is the key to social function of drama. An empathizing audience will share in the happy resolution.
