Document Summary

Just because the play was written as realism does not mean it has to be produced in this way. Just because it was written in the 19th century does not mean it has to be staged in the same period. If you choose to stick with the period there is still lots of room for creative choices. Brecht: a german marxist, exiled in 1933. Social realism: places moral ideals in the context of the real world. Epic theatre: challenges the very conception of the real world. Audience is caught up in the moment, forget that a story is being told, realism creates an illusion. Doing and telling, question why characters are doing things. And - the doing also creates a critical perspective (action made strange") Aims to engage audience with the politics of action.
