Mise en scene in the mothering heart: how elements combine to build motifs. Costume, the society man"s costume: fancier collar = higher status wealth, therefore attracts attention of the society woman. Deep space: at the restaurant, can see much of the room in certain shots, to see the tables, the crowd, and the dancers. *first scene in the garden, something the cares about. In the end scene, after the death of the baby, she trashes the garden, no longer able to see the beauty in it. Elements of mise on scene *repetition, variation, development* used to create curiosity, surprise. Later, flowers brought into the home, on the table center piece. Clothing: in the marriage home, wife dresses it up. Husband dismisses her shabby clothes when they go out. Wife finds gloves of the society woman in her husband"s jacket, clothing emblem of deceit. Wife shows affection for husband by smoothing down his clothes, removes lint etc.
