Mammies, matriarchs & other controlling images, in black feminist thought: knowledge, consciousness and the politics of empowerment. Provides an in-depth case study of representations of racialized black womanhood and femininity in the u. s. Traces the lineage and history of these images from those that were created about black slaves and connects them to contemporary discursive restrictions for black women"s identification in popular media. Offers examples of a kind of resistance against these archetypes, tropes and stereotypes in literary production and in film. Examples of resistance to the restrictive tropes of black womanhood (and black masculinity) are fervently debated in black feminist circles as well as between white and black women. We will briefly explore those debates at the end of the lecture through the examples of beyonc "s body of work as well as representations of. The black lady (i will add and talk about the sapphire or the angry black woman stereotype later in the lecture)
