Satrapi trying to tell her own story and represent iran from the perspective of someone who actually lived there. Criticized for representations of the veil - reinforcing stereotype that it is a tool of oppression. Animated format makes it feel more personal, allows filmmakers to visualize things that can"t be filmed (ex. Laverne cox on cover of time magazine, caitlyn jenner on cover of vanity fair. The pathetic trans person - we"re meant to pity them. Big conflict of the story is that the main character is trans. Not hiring transgender actors to play transgender characters (or characters in general) Not recognizing that someone is transgender (using the wrong pronouns, birth name, etc. ) Not recognizing the importance of a transgender person who has contributed to a project or event. But trans visibility is not always a good thing - it can leave certain people more vulnerable to harm, erases ongoing struggles and work of trans activists in the past.
