Document Summary

They absorb energy - light or chemical energy in organic molecules - release heat and metabolic waste products. 1. energy can be transferred and transformed but it cannot be created or destroyed. 2. every energy transformation makes the universe more disordered. A measure of disorder s a measure of randomness. More random a collection of matter the greater its entropy. Order can increase locally but there is an unstoppable trend toward randomization of the universe. Increased entropy of universe takes that form of increasing heat. Exergonic - a net release of free energy; deltag is negative , change in g is negative. Endergonic- reaction: absorbs free energy from its surroundings delta g is positive. Reactions in closed systems eventually reach equilibrium and can do no work. Cell maintain disequilibrium because they are open with a constant flow of material in an out of the call. A cell continues to do work throughout its life.
