Court has the power to fire private counsel of child if they believe he/she is not representing the best interest of the youth: can therefore hire a lawyer for the youth. If pare(cid:374)t"s i(cid:374)co(cid:373)e is below certain cut-off level = can apply for legal aid within each respective province. During youth court observations, it is worthwhile to note which type of lawyer is more likely to be representing the youth: duty counsel if they are representing many people. Objective of ycja is to highlight the need for restraint in the use of pre-trial detention. Accused = during trial (innocent till proven guilty); if they are found guilty = offender.
